A North County SLO Fall Drive Worth Stealing

There are days when you want a full itinerary.

And then there are days when you just want enough of a plan to get out of the house.

This North County SLO fall drive is the second kind.

Start with coffee in downtown Paso Robles, take the slower roads through westside wine country, stop in Templeton for lunch, add a seasonal farm stop, and finish back in Paso as the afternoon starts turning into evening.

Nothing complicated.

Just a few good stops and some of my favorite North County roads in between.

Start in Downtown Paso Robles

The route begins in downtown Paso Robles.

There is no need to rush out of town immediately. Grab coffee first, take a minute, and then head west once you are ready.

For this route, the first stop is H. Cheval Coffee.

Stop 1: H. Cheval Coffee in Paso Robles

Start the afternoon with coffee at H. Cheval.

It gives you an easy downtown starting point before heading toward the quieter roads west of town.

Grab your coffee, settle in for a few minutes, and officially start the drive.

Once you leave downtown, point the car toward Peachy Canyon Road.

Stop 2: Peachy Canyon Road and Vineyard Drive

This is the part where I would intentionally skip Highway 101.

Head through Peachy Canyon and continue along Vineyard Drive.

You will pass vineyards, oak-covered hills, and the quieter roads that make this part of North County feel completely different from the busier stretches around town.

And honestly, this part does not need another destination attached to it.

The drive is the stop.

Take your time.

Fall is one of my favorite times to be on these roads because the light changes, the vineyards start shifting with the season, and the whole area has a different feel than it does during summer.

Stop 3: Lunch at Pier 46 Seafood Co. in Templeton

Eventually, make your way toward Templeton.

By then, lunch will probably sound pretty good.

Pier 46 Seafood Co. makes an easy casual stop before continuing the afternoon.

Have lunch, slow things down for a bit, and resist the urge to turn the day into a race to the next destination.

This is supposed to be the easier version of a North County afternoon.

Stop 4: Jack Creek Farms

From Templeton, head west for a seasonal stop at Jack Creek Farms.

This is the part of the route that makes the day feel especially appropriate for October.

Depending on what is happening when you visit, you can wander around, pick up something seasonal, and enjoy one of those North County places that feels particularly good this time of year.

I like having one stop on the route that is simply there because it is fall.

Not every outing needs to be packed with activities.

Sometimes pumpkins, farm stands, and a backroad drive are enough.

Stop 5: Finish in Downtown Paso Robles

After Jack Creek Farms, head back toward Paso Robles.

By this point, the light should be starting to change.

Park near Downtown City Park and walk a few blocks.

You can grab dinner if you are hungry, stop somewhere for a drink, or just take a lap around the park before heading home.

There does not need to be one final official destination.

Let the rest of the evening figure itself out.

The Full North County Fall Route

If you want the simple version, here it is:

Start: Downtown Paso Robles
Coffee: H. Cheval Coffee
Scenic drive: Peachy Canyon Road and Vineyard Drive
Lunch: Pier 46 Seafood Co. in Templeton
Seasonal stop: Jack Creek Farms
Finish: Downtown Paso Robles

It is enough for a half day without packing the schedule.

And you get several different sides of North County along the way.

Downtown Paso.

Westside vineyard roads.

Templeton.

A seasonal farm stop.

Then back to Paso for the end of the afternoon.

Why I Like This Route

One of my favorite things about living in North San Luis Obispo County is how quickly the setting can change.

You can start downtown, be surrounded by vineyards and oak-covered hills a short time later, stop for lunch in Templeton, and finish the day back where you started.

You do not have to drive far to make an ordinary afternoon feel like you actually went somewhere.

That is exactly what this route is for.

No packed schedule.

No trying to fit too much into one afternoon.

No pressure to do everything.

Coffee.

Backroads.

Lunch.

A fall stop.

Golden hour.

That is my kind of North County afternoon.

What North County stop would you add?
