I've always thought Sundays are different.
Not because there's something special on the calendar.
Because they give us permission to slow down.
No rushing from one appointment to the next.
No feeling like every minute has to be productive.
Just a day to enjoy wherever you happen to be.
Around San Luis Obispo County, Sundays have become some of my favorite days of the week.
Not because I have a big plan.
Usually because I don't.
Here's what a perfect slow Sunday looks like to me.
Start the Morning Without Looking at the Clock
I don't set an alarm.
If I wake up early, great.
If I don't, that's okay too.
The first thing I usually want is coffee.
Not because I need caffeine.
Because I enjoy the ritual.
Finding a local coffee shop.
Taking that first sip while the town is still quiet.
Watching people ease into their morning.
There's something comforting about knowing nobody seems to be in much of a hurry.
I wish more days felt like that.
Take a Walk Before Deciding What's Next
I've learned not to overthink Sundays.
Instead of making a schedule, I'll take a walk.
Sometimes it's around City Park in Paso Robles.
Sometimes it's along the Embarcadero in Morro Bay.
Sometimes it's just wherever I happen to be.
Walking has a way of slowing your thoughts.
You notice things you would normally drive right past.
Flowers blooming outside a shop.
A couple sitting on a bench.
Someone walking their dog with absolutely nowhere to be.
It's simple.
But those are the moments I remember.
Maybe the Coast Is Calling
Some Sundays seem to point toward the ocean.
I'll head west without much of a destination.
Highway 46 becomes Highway 1.
The air gets cooler.
The scenery changes.
Before long, I'm standing somewhere near the water wondering why I don't do this every weekend.
The nice thing about living here is that the coast is never just an idea.
It's close enough to become part of an ordinary afternoon.
Lunch Doesn't Need to Be Fancy
One thing I appreciate more now than I used to...
A good meal doesn't have to be complicated.
Find a patio.
Order something fresh.
Stay a little longer than planned.
I've had lunches that lasted two hours because nobody felt like leaving.
Nobody was checking the time.
Nobody had anywhere else to be.
That's becoming rare.
I think it's worth protecting.
Wander Somewhere You've Been Before
One of my favorite Sunday habits is revisiting places I already know.
Cambria.
Templeton.
Downtown Paso Robles.
Not because I'm looking for something new.
Because I know I'll notice something I missed before.
Maybe it's a bookstore I walked past.
A small art gallery.
A bakery I somehow never stopped in.
Familiar places have a way of surprising you when you're not in a hurry.
Leave Room for an Unexpected Stop
This might be the best advice I can give.
Don't fill your day.
Leave an hour with nothing planned.
That's usually when something interesting happens.
You notice a roadside farm stand.
Someone recommends a place you've never been.
You decide to take the scenic road home instead of the quickest one.
Some of my favorite memories started because I didn't have a schedule to keep.
End the Day Somewhere Beautiful
If I can end the day outside, I usually do.
Sometimes it's a sunset in Morro Bay.
Sometimes it's overlooking the vineyards outside Paso Robles.
Sometimes it's a quiet walk in Montaña de Oro.
I don't always need a destination.
I just need a few minutes to watch the day come to an end.
It's a nice reminder that not every weekend has to be busy to feel meaningful.
I've Stopped Trying to Make Every Weekend Productive
I used to think I needed to accomplish something every weekend.
Finish a project.
Cross something off a list.
Stay busy.
Now I think differently.
Sometimes the most productive thing I can do is rest.
Spend time with people I care about.
Take a drive.
Read a book.
Watch a sunset.
Come Monday, I always feel better because of it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's your favorite way to spend a Sunday in San Luis Obispo County?
Slowly.
Coffee, a walk, a scenic drive, good food, and wherever the day happens to lead.
Do you usually make plans?
Not many.
I like having one idea and letting the rest of the day unfold naturally.
Is the coast worth visiting even if you've been before?
Absolutely.
No two visits ever feel exactly the same.
That's one of the reasons I keep going back.
What's the best Sunday drive?
Highway 46 West toward the coast is still one of my favorites.
Especially if you aren't in a hurry.
Maybe Sundays Were Always Meant to Be This Way
The older I get, the more I appreciate quiet days.
Not because they're exciting.
Because they aren't.
They remind me that life doesn't always have to move so fast.
Sometimes happiness looks like coffee on a patio.
A drive with the windows down.
Lunch that lasts a little longer than expected.
Watching the waves.
Taking the long way home.
Around San Luis Obispo County, it's surprisingly easy to build a day around those simple moments.
And honestly...
I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday.
