You Are Not Alone: Recognizing National PTSD Awareness Day

Some wounds aren't visible.

On National PTSD Awareness Day, we pause to recognize the veterans, active-duty military members, and first responders who continue carrying the effects of trauma long after their service ends.

If you've ever struggled with PTSD, or you've loved someone who has, I want you to hear one simple message:

You are not alone.

For many people, PTSD isn't something that can be seen from the outside. It can affect relationships, sleep, work, confidence, and everyday life. Yet many people continue to suffer quietly because they're afraid of being misunderstood or judged.

Awareness matters because understanding creates connection. And connection helps people find hope.

PTSD Is More Common Than Many People Realize

Military service often requires people to experience situations most of us will never fully understand.

While many veterans transition home successfully, others return carrying experiences that continue to affect them long after they've taken off the uniform.

PTSD can look different for every person. It may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Hypervigilance
  • Nightmares
  • Depression
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Avoiding certain situations
  • Emotional numbness

No two stories are the same.

That's why compassion matters more than assumptions.

Healing Doesn't Have to Happen Alone

One of the most powerful things we can offer someone living with PTSD is simply letting them know they don't have to carry everything by themselves.

Support can come from:

  • Family
  • Friends
  • Fellow veterans
  • Professional counselors
  • Local veteran organizations
  • Community programs

Sometimes the biggest step is simply asking someone how they're doing and being willing to listen.

Why This Matters to Me

As a Homes for Heroes affiliate serving San Luis Obispo County, I've had the privilege of helping veterans, active-duty military members, healthcare professionals, teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and EMS professionals through one of life's biggest milestones: buying or selling a home.

Every hero has a story.

Some stories are filled with celebration.

Others include challenges that most people never see.

I've learned that serving our heroes isn't just about helping with real estate. It's about recognizing the sacrifices they've made and treating every family with the respect, patience, and gratitude they deserve.

A Community That Cares Makes a Difference

Healing isn't something that happens in a single day.

Neither is awareness.

National PTSD Awareness Day reminds all of us that small acts of kindness, understanding, and support can have a lasting impact.

Whether you know someone living with PTSD or simply want to learn more, taking the time to understand what they're experiencing is one way we can honor their service.

Because no one should feel like they have to face it alone.

Final Thoughts

Today is about more than raising awareness.

It's about reminding every veteran, service member, and first responder that their experiences matter, their mental health matters, and their lives matter.

If this message reaches even one person who needs to hear it today, then it's worth sharing.

You are seen.

You are valued.

And you are not alone.
