More Homes on the Market? Here’s How To Make Yours Stand Out
A few years ago, inventory hit a record low. Just about anything sold — and fast. But now, there are far more homes on the market. Listings are up nearly 20% from this time last year, and in some areas, supply is back to levels we last saw between 2017 and 2019.
For sellers, that means one thing:
👉 Your house needs to stand out and grab attention from day one.
Available inventory is made up of two key categories:
Active Listings: homes that have been sitting on the market but haven’t sold yet
New Listings: homes that were just put up for sale
According to Realtor.com, most of the recent growth in inventory isn’t from new listings — it’s from homes that are lingering on the market longer (see graph below).
That means competition is increasing, and if you’re not prepared, your listing could become one of those that sits month after month without offers.
The secret to selling in today’s market is simple: make your home an easy yes for buyers the moment it’s listed.
That means pricing it right, handling key repairs, and presenting it beautifully online and in person. Homes that do all three are still selling quickly — even in this higher-inventory market.
But homes that miss the mark are sitting. Here are some of the biggest reasons, according to Redfin and HousingWire:
❌ Overpriced from the start
❌ Skipped necessary repairs
❌ Poor staging or presentation
❌ Limited availability for showings
❌ Sellers unwilling to negotiate
❌ Weak listing photos or marketing
A few years ago, sellers could get away with skipping these steps. Low inventory meant buyers had fewer choices. But now that there are more homes to pick from, buyers can be more selective — and sellers can’t rely on luck or old strategies.
Your first few weeks on the market matter most. That’s when your listing gets the most attention online. If the price is too high or the photos don’t impress, buyers scroll right past.
Get it wrong, and your home sits. Get it right, and it sells fast — sometimes even with multiple offers.
Selling quickly isn’t about luck. It’s about strategy — and that’s where a skilled agent comes in.
A great agent will:
✅ Analyze your local market and price your home strategically
✅ Recommend key updates or repairs to boost appeal
✅ Create a marketing plan that grabs attention from day one
✅ Coordinate showings and negotiate the best possible offer
According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR):
“Home sellers without an agent are nearly twice as likely to say they didn’t accept an offer for at least three months; 53% of sellers who used an agent say they accepted an offer within a month of listing their home.”
In other words — sellers who list with an experienced agent sell faster, period.
There may be more homes on the market, but that doesn’t have to work against you.
When your house is priced right, shows well, and is marketed effectively, it will sell — even in a more competitive market.
