Looking for a way to get outside with the whole family — without turning it into a survival hike?
Luckily, San Luis Obispo County is packed with beginner-friendly, beautiful trails that even the youngest adventurers (and their tired parents) can enjoy. Whether you're pushing a stroller, wrangling a toddler, or just want a low-key nature break, these are the local trails that deliver big views with minimal whining.
1. Bob Jones Trail – SLO to Avila Beach
This paved, flat path winds along the San Luis Obispo Creek and ends at Avila Beach. It’s stroller-friendly, dog-friendly, and has plenty of shady spots for snack breaks. Start at the Ontario Road parking lot for easy access.
2. Bluff Trail – Montaña de Oro
Wide ocean views? Check. Coastal breezes? Check. This scenic trail is easy to follow and relatively flat, with benches along the way. Keep an eye out for tidepools and maybe even a whale or dolphin sighting in the distance!
3. Shell Beach Bluff Trail
Perfect for sunset strolls or low-key weekend outings. You’ll get gentle terrain and postcard-worthy views of the cliffs and ocean. Ideal for toddlers who love to run ahead.
4. Laguna Lake Trail – SLO
Short and sweet, this walk loops around the lake with views of Bishop Peak. There’s also a playground nearby, so you can promise post-walk fun as motivation.
5. Pismo State Beach Nature Trail
This mellow boardwalk trail starts near the Oceano Campground and gives kids a chance to explore dunes and spot wildlife. It’s flat, short, and full of little surprises.
✅ Easy on little legs
✅ Plenty of nature to see and explore
✅ Safe and stroller-friendly options
✅ Close to food, coffee, and bathrooms
Let your weekends include sunshine, sea breezes, and memory-making without turning your family hike into a full-blown expedition.
