Winter along the Central Coast isn’t just beautiful, it’s alive.
From migrating whales to shoreline sea life, this time of year offers some of the most incredible wildlife viewing opportunities in San Luis Obispo County.
Here’s what you can see right now.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), gray whales migrate along California’s coast annually between Alaska and Baja California. Thousands pass the Central Coast each season.
Best viewing spots:
Piedras Blancas near San Simeon
Montaña de Oro bluff trails
Avila Beach and Port San Luis
The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery near San Simeon is one of the largest mainland rookeries in the world. Winter months are peak season for breeding and pupping.
The viewing area is managed in partnership with California State Parks and Friends of the Elephant Seal.
Morro Bay is known for its thriving sea otter population. You can often spot them floating near the harbor, cracking shells on their chests.
Winter brings a wide range of migratory birds to wetlands and coastal areas, especially around:
Morro Bay Estuary
Oso Flaco Lake
Los Osos and Elfin Forest
The Morro Bay Estuary is a designated National Estuary.
Wildlife viewing here isn’t staged or commercialized. It’s organic. Natural. Real.
And it’s one more reason living along this coastline feels so special.
