Why I Never Mind Playing Tourist in My Own Hometown

I used to think being a tourist meant going somewhere new.

Booking a hotel.

Looking at maps.

Trying to squeeze as much as possible into a weekend.

Then one Saturday, I realized I'd spent the entire day doing exactly that…

...without ever leaving San Luis Obispo County.

It started with coffee.

Turned into a walk downtown.

Somehow became lunch near the coast.

Before I knew it, I was watching another Central Coast sunset wondering why I didn't do this more often.

That's when it hit me.

You don't have to travel very far to feel like you've gotten away.

Sometimes you just need to see familiar places with fresh eyes.

Stop Saving Your Favorite Places for Visitors

Have you ever noticed how we save our favorite places for other people?

Friends come into town?

Let's go to Morro Bay.

Family is visiting?

We should drive Highway 1.

Someone's never been to Paso Robles?

We'll spend the day downtown.

But when it's just us?

We stay home.

I've caught myself doing that more than once.

Now, every so often, I remind myself that I don't need out-of-town guests as an excuse to enjoy where I live.

Order Dessert

This might sound like strange advice.

But hear me out.

How often do we finish dinner and immediately head home?

The next time you're out, stay a little longer.

Order dessert.

Walk around afterward.

Watch the sky change colors.

Some of my favorite evenings weren't memorable because of where I ate.

They were memorable because I wasn't in a hurry to leave.

Walk Somewhere You've Walked a Hundred Times

One of my favorite things about the Central Coast is that familiar places never seem exactly the same.

The ocean looks different every day.

The light changes.

The weather changes.

The people change.

I've walked the same boardwalk in Cambria dozens of times.

Every visit feels a little different.

That's one of the reasons I keep going back.

Let the Day Unfold

One thing I've learned is that the best Saturdays usually aren't planned down to the minute.

Maybe you start in Paso Robles.

Someone mentions a bakery in Cayucos.

That turns into a drive along Highway 1.

Suddenly you're walking on the beach instead of doing whatever was on your original schedule.

Perfect.

Those are usually the stories you remember.

Go Somewhere for No Reason at All

Not every outing needs a purpose.

You don't need reservations.

You don't need an event.

Sometimes it's enough to say,

"Let's go for a drive."

That's it.

No destination.

Just see where the afternoon takes you.

Living here gives us that opportunity.

I think we should take advantage of it more often.

Notice What's Changed

This is something I love doing.

Walk through downtown Paso Robles.

Notice a new restaurant.

A mural you somehow missed.

A shop you've never walked into.

Even in places we know well, there's usually something new waiting to be discovered.

Sometimes we simply have to slow down enough to notice it.

Be a Regular Somewhere

There's something comforting about being a familiar face.

Maybe it's your favorite coffee shop.

Maybe it's the farmers market.

Maybe it's the little restaurant where someone recognizes you before you've even ordered.

Those places become part of your story.

And over time, they make a town feel even more like home.

Take More Pictures

Not for social media.

For yourself.

Some of my favorite photos aren't technically good.

They're reminders.

A quiet morning.

Friends around a table.

A beautiful sunset.

An afternoon that wasn't supposed to become anything special.

Years later, those pictures help you remember exactly how it felt.
