Where I Tell Friends to Take Out-of-Town Guests in San Luis Obispo County

Whenever someone tells me they're coming to visit, I usually get the same question.

"Where should we go?"

The funny thing is, I never have the same answer.

It depends on who's visiting.

Some people want to spend the day at the beach. Others are excited to explore wineries. Families usually want somewhere the kids can run around. And sometimes people just want to experience what makes the Central Coast feel...well...like the Central Coast.

Here's the thing.

You don't have to see everything.

I'd rather have one great day than spend the weekend racing from one attraction to the next.

These are the places I keep coming back to. They're the spots I recommend when friends and family come to town because they give people a real feel for what it's like to spend time in San Luis Obispo County.

Morro Bay Always Makes the List

If you've never seen Morro Rock in person, pictures don't really do it justice.

I like starting the day with a walk along the Embarcadero.

You'll usually spot sea otters floating in the harbor, fishermen heading out, and people taking their time instead of rushing from one place to another.

Grab a coffee.

Walk the waterfront.

Maybe stop for lunch overlooking the bay.

It's simple, but that's exactly why I love it.

Downtown Paso Robles Feels Like Home

One of my favorite things about Paso Robles is that you don't need a plan.

Park near the downtown square and just wander.

Pop into a bookstore.

Browse a local boutique.

Find a patio for lunch.

If it's summer, chances are you'll hear live music somewhere nearby.

It's easy to spend a few hours here without ever looking at your watch.

That's part of the charm.

If the Weather Is Nice, We're Going to Avila Beach

There are a lot of beautiful beaches along the Central Coast.

Avila is usually the one I recommend first.

The beach is easy to get to.

Restaurants are close by.

You can grab an ice cream, walk the pier, or just sit with your toes in the sand for a while.

Sometimes that's all you need.

Montaña de Oro Never Gets Old

Everyone has that place they keep going back to.

For me, it's Montaña de Oro.

The first time you stand on the bluff looking out over the Pacific, you'll understand why.

The waves crash against the cliffs.

The trails seem to go on forever.

Even on a busy weekend, it still feels peaceful.

If someone only has one chance to experience the natural beauty of San Luis Obispo County, this is high on my list.

Wine Tasting Isn't Just for Wine Lovers

People hear "Paso Robles" and immediately think wine.

They're not wrong.

But what I enjoy most isn't always what's in the glass.

It's sitting outside with friends, taking in the vineyard views, and slowing down for an afternoon.

Even people who don't know much about wine usually leave saying they had a great time.

Highway 1 Is Part of the Experience

One mistake I see visitors make is treating Highway 1 like it's just a road.

It's not.

It's part of the destination.

Drive through Cayucos.

Stop in Cambria.

Pull over when you see an overlook.

Walk Moonstone Beach.

You don't need a packed itinerary.

Some of the best memories happen between the places you planned to visit.

I Never Skip the Farmers Market

Whether it's downtown San Luis Obispo or one of our smaller communities, farmers markets always give visitors a feel for the people who live here.

Fresh peaches.

Local flowers.

Live music.

Kids dancing while their parents shop.

It's the kind of experience that doesn't show up on every travel website, but it tells you a lot about our community.

If It's Fair Week, We're Going

If friends happen to visit while the California Mid-State Fair is in town, we're going.

No question.

We'll grab something that's probably fried.

Walk through the livestock barns.

Ride the Ferris wheel if someone talks me into it.

Then we'll stay until the lights come on.

The fair feels like summer around here.

The Best Part Isn't the Destination

Here's something I've learned after living on the Central Coast for years.

The places matter.

But the people you're with matter more.

Some of my favorite memories have been completely unplanned.

Stopping for pie because someone saw a sign.

Taking the long way home along the coast.

Watching the sunset because nobody was ready to leave.

That's the version of San Luis Obispo County I hope people experience.

Not just the landmarks.

The feeling.

I love where I live, and maybe that's what I hope people notice most when they visit.

Yes, we have incredible beaches, wineries, and small towns.

But it's more than that.

Life just feels a little slower here.

People wave.

Conversations last longer.

You find yourself taking the scenic route because...why not?
