We love Bishop Peak. We do.
But SLO County has so many incredible trails that don’t involve racing for parking at sunrise.
If you’re looking for something scenic, peaceful, and a little less crowded, here are local favorites worth exploring.
Located in Morro Bay State Park, this short but rewarding hike gives you panoramic views of Morro Rock, the harbor, and the Nine Sisters volcanic chain. It’s manageable, family-friendly, and wildly scenic.
This coastal bluff trail connects to the Pismo Preserve system and offers dramatic cliffside ocean views. It’s breezy, beautiful, and far less trafficked than other coastal paths.
Part of the Irish Hills Natural Reserve, Islay Hill is one of the smaller volcanic peaks in the area. The hike is steady but doable, and the summit views stretch across SLO city and Edna Valley.
Over 400 acres of protected open space with forested trails and coastal bluffs. Managed by the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, it’s ideal for a peaceful ocean walk.
A wooden boardwalk trail through pygmy oak woodland leading to bay views. It’s easy, accessible, and perfect for families.
The best part about hiking in SLO County? You can go from ocean views to oak forests to vineyard overlooks within 20 minutes.
And sometimes the “hidden” trails are the ones that make you appreciate living here the most.
